There are times when we naturally question why our life is the way that it is and wonder if a path lies through life’s difficulties. The challenges and losses of the pandemic have tested our lives and society in unimaginable ways, leading to questioning life’s meaning and purpose.

The question of human suffering weighed heavily on the mind of a young Indian prince named Siddhartha, who – 2,500 years ago – left a life of privilege, seeking to answer why humans suffer. Siddhartha became an enlightened buddha, or one who is awakened, when he awoke to the realisation that human suffering and despair lie in the attachments and distractions that obscure a clear-sighted view of life, and through practice, anyone can dispel those obstacles and uncover their true potential and compassionate nature.

In 1935, the founders of Shinnyo-en, Masters Shinjo and Tomoji, sought to answer an inner calling to help others.  After enshrining a Buddhist image in their home, the young couple entered into a period of winter ascetic practices following the Buddha’s footsteps.  Not knowing their destination, they sought a path with a pure wish to support as many people as possible find peace and happiness.

Drawing from the experiences of Masters Shinjo and Tomoji, and the many who have walked the spiritual path, our daily programme of chanting, themed talks, and meditation creates a moment of retreat to look anew at our lives and discover ways that Shinnyo spiritual practice and reflection supports positive renewal and growth. We invite you to pause, find inspiration, and refocus with hope for the new year ahead.
