Shinnyo-en is an international Buddhist community originally established in Japan in 1936. The Buddhist term shinnyo denotes both buddhahood (spiritual awakening) and the nature of reality; en refers to a boundless garden or open space. Shinnyo-en is a place where all people regardless of age, gender, culture or religious background can learn how to use each day as an opportunity to connect with others and seek awakening.

Shinnyo Buddhism is based on the Mahaparinirvana Sutra which is considered as the final teachings of Shakyamuni Buddha. This set of teachings emphasises that all people have the "seed" of enlightenment within them and by acting with compassion and concern for others, can cultivate that seed and bring forth their true self and full potential.

Shinnyo-en offers a path of practice for people to discover and develop their inner buddha or awakened nature, and gain insight into themselves through altruistic practice that supports the well-being of others.

Shinnyo Buddhists promote the values of peaceful coexistence and cooperation through the works of philanthropic foundations, and place great value on the contributions that each individual can make toward life on our planet. Everyone's spiritual journey is unique, and Shinnyo-en offers an environment where all can grow and cultivate their aspiration for awakening.

Shinnyo-en’s UK centre was established in 1994. We offer various Buddhist trainings and support for individual spiritual development.
